China Visa-Free Transit for Americans (2026)

Partly — Americans can transit China visa-free for up to 10 days

Policy type: 240-hour visa-free transit — onward travel to a third country or region required

How the 240-hour transit works

United States passport holders can spend up to 10 days in China without a visa when — and only when — China is a stopover between two different places. The route must be A → China → B. Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan count as valid onward destinations, which makes itineraries like United States → Shanghai → Hong Kong perfectly eligible.

“Foreign nationals entering China through the visa-free transit policy can make cross-province travels within the allowed areas for visa-free transit travelers in these 24 provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities).”

Getting there from United States

Direct flights connect major US hubs — New York (JFK), Los Angeles (LAX), and San Francisco (SFO) — with Beijing (PEK) and Shanghai (PVG), operated by both US carriers (United, Delta) and Chinese carriers (Air China, China Eastern, China Southern, Hainan Airlines). Routes shift with demand, so check current schedules directly with the airline.

Frequently asked questions

Does flying home count as transit to a third country?
No. United States → China → United States does not qualify. You must continue to a different country or region — Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan all count as onward destinations.
Where can I enter and how long can I stay?
You can enter through any of the 65 designated ports across 24 provinces and stay up to 240 hours (10 days) within the permitted regions. The clock starts at midnight after your entry.
What documents do I need on arrival?
Your passport (valid 3+ months), a confirmed onward ticket to a third country or region within 240 hours, and your accommodation details. You'll complete an arrival card and a temporary entry permit at the border.
Can I visit anywhere in China during transit?
Most major destinations are covered, but some provinces are excluded from the transit policy. Check the permitted-area list for your entry port before planning side trips.
I'm American — why do I need transit instead of full visa-free entry?
The United States is not currently on China's 30-day unilateral visa-free list — only the 240-hour transit applies to US passport holders. If you want a longer or unrestricted stay, you'll need a tourist (L) visa.
